Sky Mesa was an undefeated Grade 1 stakes winning 2-year-old. His 2-year-olds in training so much "looked (and worked) the part" that 25 sold, averaging $204,000. So we've been a little letdown that Sky Mesa only has two winners (one of which is stakes placed) so far. BUT ----
  • Pulpit, sire of Sky Mesa, had only three winners at the end September, when he was a Freshman Sire.
  • AP Indy, sire of Pulpit, was a G1 stakes winner at 2 but had only four winners at the end of October, when he was a first crop sire in 1996.
And AP Indy is currently the Leading North American Sire of 2007 and Pulpit is in the Top Twenty Leading Sires of 2007!

Sky Mesa (Pulpit-Caress, by Storm Cat); stands for $30,000 in Kentucky. Winner of the Hopeful Stakes and Lane's End Breeders' Futurity, Sky Mesa was one of the best 2-year-olds of his crop. He also finished second in the Haskell Invitational Handicap and third in the Dwyer Stakes at 3 in an abbreviated campaign. By a top young son of A.P. Indy and from a female family of considerable quality, Sky Mesa is one of this year's major freshman sires who was bred to an impressive group of mares. His fourth dam is a half-sister to Buckpasser and his runners should have speed at 2 and be best by year's end as distances increase. Although he never raced on grass, Sky Mesa is an HT2 (hidden turf on top and bottom) sire whose offspring should flourish on turf.
