War Chant's debut crop, foals of 2002, has already produced five stakes winners, and more are in the pipeline for this son of Danzig and champion Hollywood Wildcat, by Kris S. Bred on the well noted Danzig/Turn-to nick, War Chant should work well with other Danzig nicks including Sir Gaylord, his half-brother Secretariat and other Bold Ruler strains, Buckpasser, Raise A Native, and Ribot. War Chant is a half-brother to two other stakes winners in Double Cat (by Storm Cat) and Ministers Wild Cat (by Deputy Minister). The sires of both of those might also be good bloodlines to try with War Chant in the future.
War Chant's stakes winners represent five different broodmare sirelines. His top American runner so far is the dual turf stakes winner and Grade 3 winner CHATTAHOOCHEE WAR, whose dam is Irish-bred Buffalo Berry by Sri Pekan. This is a very inbred pedigree, since for starters, he's inbred 3x4 to Northern Dancer through Danzig and Storm Bird (sire of his second dam). What makes this pedigree remarkable is that he's also inbred 4x4 to Roberto, sire of both Kris S. and Sri Pekan's sire Red Ransom. This is one of the first instances of inbreeding to Roberto in a top runner, and shouldn't be surprising since Roberto has been such an influential sire. Chattahoochee War is also linebred to Raise A Native, even moreso to his sire Native Dancer, plus a double to Crafty Admiral.
War Chant is also the sire of KAREN'S CAPER, one of the best fillies of her crop in England in 2005. She's out of Miss Caerleona, by Caerleon, so a Nijinsky II-line sire, and so again, inbred to Northern Dancer 3x4. Similar to Chattahoochee War, she's linebred to Hail to Reason (sire of Roberto), in fact both source strains, the stallion Kris S. and the mare Foreseer, are bred on a Hail to Reason/Princequillo cross.
War Chant's first juvenile stakes winner was UP LIKE THUNDER, whose dam, With A Wink, is a daughter of Clever Trick. This is similar to the theme already established, since Clever Trick's sire Icecapade is a close relative to Northern Dancer, bred on same Nearctic/Native Dancer cross. Icecapade also has a cross of Fighting Fox, found in Danzig's dam through Crafty Admiral. Up Like Thunder's second dam has a cross of Princequillo, who is 5x5 in the mating.
The War Chant filly WINSOME is out of Blushing Heiress by Blushing John. Blushing John is bred on the Nasrullah/Princequillo cross, so is similar in pedigree to Kris S., with Nasrullah via Nashua, and Princequillo in combination. There's a second cross of Nasrullah in the third dam through Nantallah. The second dam here is by Our Native, who was by a son of Raise a Native (doubled here 5x5) out of a daughter of Crafty Admiral (also doubled 5x5). This is a similar combination to that found in Danzig, who has a daughter of Native Dancer (sire of Raise a Native) and a son of Crafty Admiral.
War Chant's first stakes winner was the French-raced filly SPECIALE. Her pedigree is unique in that her dam is already inbred 4x4 to Northern Dancer, so she's got three crosses 3x5x5. There's also a second distant cross of Turn-to via Sir Gaylord in her third dam.
Common themes here are inbreeding to Northern Dancer (in 3 of the 5 stakes winners) and a fourth has the close relative Icecapade. One is inbred to Roberto and a second linebred to his sire Hail to Reason, and a third linebred to Turn-to. Three have linebreeding to Princequillo. One is linebred to Crafty Admiral, and another to his sire Fighting Fox. This may be significant since Fighting Fox was by Sir Gallahad III, who, along with his full or half brothers Bull Dog and Admiral Drake, play a strong role in the pedigrees of Hail to Reason and Roberto.
If Sir Gallahad III/Bull Dog is a key strain for War Chant, he might do very well with mares carrying the blood of Affirmed, who is bred on the same Exclusive Native/Crafty Admiral cross as Our Native, found in Winsome's pedigree, and whose dam is extensively linebred to Sir Gallahad III. Affirmed has already had success with Danzig, who has some parallel strains in Native Dancer and Crafty Admiral.
War Chant might also do well with Mr. Prospector, who has a build up of Sir Gallahad III/Bull Dog, although it would be best to avoid close inbreeding, such as sending Mr. Prospector daughters or granddaughters to him that would set up inbreeding closer than 3x4, which is generally undesirable.
