Darwin triumphs in Belgrave S.

Big Brown's graded stakes winner Darwin returned to the winner's circle on Sunday at Fairyhouse in Great Britain with a well-earned head victory in the Belgrave S. The 4-year-old colt took the Group 3 Minstrel S. at The Curragh last year and is now 4-0-1 in eight starts.

Big Brown now has 10 stakes winners in 2014. With more than $1.7 million in progeny earnings, Big Brown is in the top 10 on the Third-Crop Sire list.

Darwin attended the pace early in the six furlong Belgrave, with jockey Joseph O'Brien moving to the bay colt to the front with a quarter-mile to go, then holding off a late-closing Russian Soul to secure the victory.

O’Brien said afterwards, "I probably got to the front too soon but around here I needed to ride him a bit more positive as he gets the trip well. When he gets fast ground and a straight track I don’t know how high he can go. He is entitled to go back into group company now and he’d handle hard ground.”

Aidan O’Brien, Darwin's trainer and the jockey's father, has nominated Darwin for the Group 1 Sussex S. at Goodwood later this month, but he will probably be reserved for the Group 3 Phoenix Sprint at the Curragh or Group 3 Desmond S. at Leopardstown in August.

Darwin is owned by Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier & Michael Tabor.  The Pennsylvania-bred is a half-brother to the two-time stakes winner Dagnabit and is out of a half-sister to Grade 2 Remsen S. winner Comeonmom.

Darwin was purchased on behalf of his owners by Demi O'Byrne for $1.3 million out of the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Florida March Sale of 2-year-olds in training, which was the top price at the Palm Meadows auction.
