Kim K gives Will Take Charge first stakes winner
Sunday, September 16, 2018
Top-five First-Crop sire Will Take Charge got his first stakes winner on Saturday at Los Alamitos when Kim K rolled to a three-length win in the $100,000 Barretts Debutante S.

The 2-year-old filly topped off a terrific day for her sire, who also got his first graded stakes horse when Lightscameraaction placed in the Pocahontas S. (G2) at Churchill Downs. Will Take Charge is second on the First-Crop sire list by stakes horses (4) and fourth by progeny earnings ($406,992).

Kim K had shown speed in her Sept. 2 debut at Del Mar before fading slightly late. She was sharp out of the gate in the Debutante, battling with Square Peggy and Naughty Tiger for the lead for the backstretch run. Backing off the lead on the turn, she came on again entering the stretch and put away her foes with a strong finish.

The final time for the 6 1/2-furlongs was 1:16.28.

"She was short first time out," winning trainer Peter Miller said. "I was a little reluctant to come back (today) on two weeks rest, but I knew she needed that race. (Del Mar's main track was) deep and tiring, and she was in the middle of a three- or four-horse speed spread going 6 1/2 (furlongs), so I knew she would be fit."

Bred in Kentucky by Lynn Schiff out of the eight-time stakes winner Trip for A. J., Kim K was a $335,000 purchase by Rockingham Ranch out of Sequel Bloodstock's consignment to the Barretts Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. She now has $57,200 in earnings.
