Caleb's Posse

Caleb's Posse - Progeny

By: Alan Porter

“Hero of the Breeder’s Cup Mile (gr. I), millionaire Caleb’s Posse was one of the most formidable sprinter/milers of his era. From the Deputy Minister sire line, he is by a record-breaking Leading Freshman Sire.”

Caleb’s Posse’s sire, Posse, a son of Silver Deputy, has a daughter strain of Mr. Prospector in his pedigree, and duplicating this strain has proved very successful for him, appearing in 16 of his stakes winners, 13 in the male line of the mare, and there are already two stakes winners by Posse sons out of Mr. Prospector line mares. Posse sired Champion Kodiak Kowboy out of a mare Coronado's Quest; graded stakes winner No Advantage, out of a mare by Tactical Advantage; as well as stakes winners from daughters of Twining, End Sweep, and West Acre each of these stallions being by Forty Niner. This suggests looking for mares by Distorted Humor (and his sons, Sharp Humor, Any Given Saturday and Flower Alley), Gold Fever, Luhuk, Trippi, Editor’s Note, Banker’s Gold and Jules.

Out mares from the Fappiano line, Posse has sired grade one winning two-year-old Rolling Fog from a daughter of Unbridled’s Song, and both he and a son have stakes winners out of mares by A. P. Jet. There are numerous sons of Unbridled’s Song that might be tried here, among them Dunkirk, Even the Score (who might suit particularly well), First Defence, Old Fashioned, Rockport Harbor and Songandaprayer. Unbridled might also be introduced via Broken Vow, Empire Maker, Grindstone and Birdstone. Other sources of Fappiano include Cryptoclearance (sire of Victory Gallop – who looks especially interesting here – and grandsire of Candy Ride), Rubiano and Quiet American (whose grandson, Midnight Lute, would appeal here). From the Gone West branch of Mr. Prospector, there are stakes winners by Posse and his sons out of mares by Mr. Greeley (sire of El Corredor) and Grand Slam, which also invites trying daughters of Elusive Quality, Speightstown and Proud Citizen.

Posse is sire of stakes winner Intimissimi out of a mare by Our Emblem (a brother to Miner’s Mark), a horse who combines Mr. Prospector and Buckpasser, as do Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair; grandsire of Formal Gold), Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakddim, Petionville and Cape Town, who might be particularly interesting) and Woodman (whose three-quarters brother, Not For Love, is also broodmare sire of a Posse stakes winner), is Still with the Mr. Prospector line, Posse is sire of Deputy Dance out of a mare by Robyn Dancer, and stakes winner Cruise from a mare by that horse's sire Crafty Prospector (also sire of Prospector's Gamble and Prospect Bay). There is also a Posse stakes winner from a daughter of Distant View.
Silver Deputy has been extremely good with mares descending from various branches of the Bold Ruler line, however, the majority of these broodmare sires are now poorly-represented in the population. Caleb's Posse is bred on a version of this cross, as he is out of a mare by Slewacide who is a Seattle Slew/Buckpasser cross. As breeding a stallion to mares from his own broodmare sire line is often a successful formula, trying Seattle Slew, seems worthwhile here. The Seatle Slew/Buckpasser cross responsible for Slewacide also produced, Slew o' Gold (sire of Thirty Six Red). More likely to be found are descendents of the similarly-bred A.P. Indy, who could be introduced through daughters of Pulpit (and his sons Tapit and Sky Mesa), Malibu Moon, Mineshaft, Congrats, Flatter, Bernardini, Golden Missile, Jump Start (broodmare sire of a 2014 Posse two-year-old stakes winner) or Stephen Got Even. Chief Seattle, a parallel cross to the dam of Caleb's Posse could also be an interesting son of Seattle Slew to consider.

Posse is out of a mare by Rahy, who in turn is out of Champion, Glorious Song, a daughter of Halo, and has sired a stakes winner out of a mare by Rahy. As Posse already has multiple stakes winner Kinsolving out of a mare by Straight Man (by Saint Ballado, a brother to Glorious Song) it could pay to try mares by other sons of Saint Ballado, such as Sweetsouthernsaint, Yankee Victor, and Saint Liam, or Saint Ballado's brother  Devil's Bag (sire of Devil His Due). Other strains of Halo should also be beneficial, the most promising being Southern Halo and his son, More Than Ready. From the same Hail to Reason male line as Halo there are Posse stakes winners out of mares by Stop the Music and his son Cure the Blues (sire of American Chance). Silver Deputy has also scored with the Roberto branch of Hail to Reason through Dynaformer, Kris S. (sire of Arch, Prized, Kissin Kris, You and I and Rock Hard Ten), and Silver Hawk.

Posse is sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by Lord At War, the broodmare sire of a Champion by Silver Deputy, and also a stakes winner out of a mare by Meadowlake, a son of Hold Your Peace, from the Prince John sire line. From the In Reality line, Posse has a stakes winner out of a mare by Valid Appeal (sire of Successful Appeal, Valid Wager and Valid Expectations).
