Exchange Rate

Exchange Rate - Progeny

By: Alan Porter

“A prolific stakes sire, Exchange Rate is one of the leading sons of Danzig standing at stud in the world today. Particularly noted for precocious runners, he has sired champion juveniles of both sexes.“

A product of the extremely successful Danzig/Mr. Prospector cross, Exchange Rate has enjoyed considerable success when crossed by over Mr. Prospector line mares, this pattern providing 16 of his stakes winners. This includes a pair of graded stakes winners out of mares by Street Cry, a son of Machiavellian, and himself sire of Street Sense and Street Boss. Exchange Rate has graded winner Xchanger out of a mare by Crafty Prospector (sire of Robyn Dancer, Prospectors Gamble, Prospect Bay, Crafty C. T. and Crafty Friend), as well as graded scorers Rated Fiesty and Exchanger from daughters of Count the Time and Roy, sired respectively by the three-quarters related Regal Search and Fappiano. There are also Exchange Rate stakes winners out of daughters of the Fappiano stallions Cahill Road and Pentelicus, respectively a brother and three-quarters brother to Unbridled. This would open the door to trying Unbridled through daughters of such as Broken Vow (broodmare sire of a Danzig line grade one winner), Empire Maker, Grindstone, Birdstone and Unbridled’s Song (available through Dunkirk, Even the Score, First Defence, Old Fashioned, Rockport Harbor and Songandaprayer). We can also note  Fappiano supplying the dam of a Danzig line grade one winner via a mare by Quiet American, and there are also Danzig line graded stakes winners out of mares by that horse’s son, Real Quiet (sire of Midnight Lute).

There is a Exchange Rate stakes winner out of a mare by Mr. Prospector son, Gone West, and another out of the Gone West grandson, El Corredor (by Mr. Greeley), which would also suggest considering mares by Speightstown, Grand Slam, Elusive Quality and Proud Citizen. There is a pair of stakes winners by Exchange Rate from mares by Woodman, a three-quarters relative to Exchange Rate’s broodmare sire, Seeking the Gold, and it could also be worth introducing Mr. Prospector through the similarly-bred Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair and grandsire of Formal Gold). From the Forty Niner branch of Mr. Prospector, there is a stakes winner out of a daughter of West Acre, which indicates considering mares by Distorted Humor (who works well under Danzig) and sons, as well as Coronado’s Quest, Tactical Advantage, End Sweep, Trippi, Banker’s Gold, Twining, Gold Fever, Luhuk, Editor’s Note and Jules. There are also Exchange Rate stakes winners out of mares by Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid) and Point Given (by Thunder Gulch).
Exchange Rate is sire of 2014 grade one winning juvenile filly, Sunset Glow, out of a mare by Dynaformer, a son of Roberto, and from that broodmare sire line he also has graded stakes winning two-year-old colt Exfactor out of a mare by Prized (by Kris S., also sire of Arch – who would give a well-placed double of Danzig – Kissin Kris, You and I and Rock Hard Ten). We can also note success for Danzig line stallions with mares descending from Roberto though Red Ransom, Lear Fan and Silver Hawk. We can note that Roberto is a Hail to Reason line stallion, and that Exchange Rate has sired a grade one winner out of a mare by Halo stallion Southern Halo (whose son, More Than Ready should be a very good fit here) and a stakes winner of a mare by Halo son Saint Ballado (sire of Saint Liam, Yankee Victor, Captain Bodgit, Sweetsouthernsaint, Straight Man and Flame Thrower), himself a brother to Devil’s Bag (sire of Diablo and Devil His Due).

Exchange Rate is sire of grade one winner Ermine out of a mare by Thirty Six Red (by Slew o’Gold), and a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s sire, Seattle Slew. The broad cross of Danzig line stallions with Seattle Slew line has produced more than 80 stakes winners, among them from daughters of A.P. Indy (whose sons, Malibu Moon, Pulpit, Old Trieste and Stephen Got Even, are all broodmare sires of Danzig line stakes winners, suggesting also trying him through such as Mineshaft, Congrats, Flatter, Bernardini, Majestic Warrior – giving inbreeding to Seeking the Gold – Jump Start, Tapit and Sky Mesa), Capote (sire of Boston Harbor), Williamstown, Vindication, General Meeting, Doneraile Court and Slew City Slew. From the same Boldnesian line as Seattle Slew comes Bold Ruckus, who is broodmare sire of Exchange Rate’s grade two winner and grade one performer Excaper. He could be brought in through Beau Genius and Bold Executive.

Exchange Rate is a Northern Dancer line stallion, but he has enjoyed success when crossed back over mares from certain other branches of that sire line. From the Storm Bird branch, he a stakes winner out of a mare by Summer Squall, and via sons of Storm Cat, has sired a grade two winner out of a mare by Giant’s Causeway (a brother to Freud, and sire of First Samurai), and stakes winners out of mares by Menifee (by Harlan, also sire of Harlan’s Holiday) and Cat Thief. It might also benefit to try Exchange Rate with mares by stallions bred on the Storm Cat/Mr. Prospector cross, such as Tale of the Cat, Storm Boot, Storm Creek and Pure Prize (who doubles the Northern Dancer/Seeking the Gold cross that produced Exchange Rate), with other possibilities including Forestry and Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir and D’Wildcat). From the Deputy Minister branch of Northern Dancer, Exchange Rate has a stakes winner out of a mare by another Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector cross, in Silver Deputy (sire of Posse, Badge of Silver and Spring At Last), and we can also note Danzig line graded winners out of mares by Deputy Minister sons, Awesome Again and Touch Gold. Exchange Rate also has a stakes winner out of a mare by El Prado, a version of the very successful Danzig/Sadler’s Wells cross that could also be tried using mares by Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller. From another branch of the line of Northern Dancer’s sire, Nearctic, Exchange Rate is sire of graded stakes winning and grade one placed Be Fair out of a daughter of Wild Again (sire of Wild Rush, Offlee Wild, Vicar, Milwaukee Brew and Wild Event).

Exchange Rate’s brilliant juvenile champion, Reckless Abandon is out of a mare by Efisio (by Formidable, from the Forli line), and he has juvenile multiple stakes winner Gordol du Mes out of a mare by Arazi (by Blushing Groom). While from different male lines, both of these stallions duplicate Exchange Rate’s family via “Blue Hen” Native Partner. This strain might also be found through Noverre (a three-quarters brother to Arazi), Ajdal (broodmare sire of Mark of Esteem), Joyeux Danseur, and through mares descending from Native Partner in direct female line. From the same male line as Arazi, Exchange Rate has the prolific stakes winner Lady Alexander out of a mare by Housebuster (by Mt. Livermore, also sire of Orientate and Peaks and Valleys).

Exchange Rate is also sire of grade one winner Swap Fliparoo out of a mare by Buckaroo (who can be brought in through Spend a Buck, Montbrook, Chapel Royal, Lite The Fuse and Pico Central). There is an Exchange Rate stakes winner out of a mare by Colonial Affair (by Pleasant Colony, who can also be found through Pleasant Tap and Pleasantly Perfect), and from the In Reality line, Exchange Rate has stakes winners from daughters of Honour and Glory (sire of Put It Back, and a son of Relaunch, a strain that can be sourced through Skywalker, Bertrando, Cee’s Tizzy, Officer and Tiznow) and World Appeal and Valid Expectations (both by Valid Appeal, also sire of Successful Appeal and Valid Wager).
