Awesome Flower won the $100,000 Lady Canterbury S. for the second consecutive year on Saturday, coming from the back of the seven horse field to win by three-quarters of a length. The win was also the second stakes victory in a row, and fourth overall, for the 5-year-old daughter of Flower Alley.
As happened in 2013, the Lady Canterbury came off the turf following heavy rains. Ridden by Francisco Torres, Awesome Flower settled well off the pace for the first six furlongs, then made a bold four-wide move coming into the stretch to strike the front inside the final furlong to finish the mile in 1:38.54 over the sloppy going.
Trained by Mike Maker for Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Awesome Flower is now 8-4-5 in 26 starts, with earnings of $414,703. In addition to her Lady Canterbury wins, she has also scored in the $100,000 HBPA S. and the $100,000 Windward S., both at Presque Isle Downs.
Bred in Maryland by Dr. and Mrs. Bowman, Milton Haggins III and Three Chimneys Farm, Awesome Flower is one of four winners out of her dam Formalities Aside, whose siblings include 2009 Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Well Armed and Grade 3 Railbird S. winner Witty.
