Will Take Charge’s 3-year-old filly overcame the far outside post in the field of 14 to defeat older fillies and mares by about two lengths in Saturday’s $75,000 Monroe S. on the Gulfstream Park turf course.
She is the seventh stakes horse this year for top-10 Second-Crop sire Will Take Charge, led by Grade 3 winner Awesome April.
Breaking widest of all in the 1 1/16-mile contest, Great Sister Diane hustled out of the gate to be fourth going around the first turn. Holding her spot down the backstretch, she advanced through the final bend and made the lead in upper stretch and pulled away late to get the distance in a solid 1:39.81 on the firm turf.
Great Sister Diane is owned by Robert Slack and bred in Kentucky by Siena Farm LLC. She is the first foal out of Private Ensign, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Ocho Ocho Ocho and a direct descendant of the undefeated Hall of Famer Personal Ensign.
