Volatile’s leading 3-year-old Tip Top Thomas tallied his second stakes win in a row Aug. 19 at Parx with a front-running score in the $200,000 Smarty Jones S.
After a track record-setting performance in last month’s Indiana Derby (G3), Tip Top Thomas was once again on his game in the 1 1/16-mile Smarty Jones. He made the lead almost immediately and led the field through a half-mile in :46.88. Fact, Tip Top Thomas’ closest pursuer the entire trip, made a big run down the stretch, but Tip Top Thomas kept finding and won by a head in 1:42.50 on a fast track.
Now with a three-race winning streak, Tip Top Thomas is 4-1-0 in six lifetime starts. A former TDN Rising Star, he was second in last year’s Champagne S. (G1) and now has earned $503,100 for owners James J. Bakke and Gerald Isbister.

A top-five Second-Crop sire, Volatile has eight stakes horses, 38 stakes horses and $3.35 million in progeny earnings to date in 2025.
