Gun Runner’s results during Tuesday’s closing session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale topped even his fantastic returns from Monday, when four yearlings brought seven figures.
Tuesday yielded bigger numbers, with six lots bringing at least $1 million, led by a $4 million colt that was the session topper and the second-highest price across the two-day sale.
Consigned by Gainesway, agent for breeder Whisper Hill Farm, hip No. 200 went to the auction’s leading buyer Flying Dutchmen.
“The cream has been rising to the top,” said Gainesway’s Brian Graves. “In our early inspections this year, I thought he was one of the top colts that I’d seen, obviously by one of the top stallions and by a proper young mare.”
The colt is out of multiple graded winner Four Graces, who is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner McCraken.
A few minutes later, Gun Runner’s hip No. 207 lit up the auction board at $2.3 million from winning bidder RTM Racing. The chestnut colt was consigned by Lane’s End, agent for St. Elias Stables LLC.
The Kentucky-bred is out of Sweet Loretta, winner of the Spinaway S. (G1) and Schuylerville S. (G3). This is also the family of champion Spring in the Air and multiple graded winner Tejano Run.
With the sale now concluded, Gun Runner’s tally saw 16 lots sell for an average of $1.367 million. Of the 35 horses to bring at least $1 million, Gun Runner accounted for 10 of them, more than any stallion represented.
