One day after Gun Runner had seven $1 million-plus yearlings at the Keeneland September sale, the seven-figure prices kept rolling in for the Three Chimneys stallion, with five lots hitting that mark, topped by a regally-bred $3.1 million colt.
Gun Runner has had 44 yearlings sell to date in 2026, and exactly half of them are $1 million or more horses.
Tuesday’s $3.1 million colt, hip No. 313, was consigned by Reiley McDonald’s Eaton Sales and bred in Kentucky by Rosa Colasanti. Ben McElroy, bidding on behalf of Kia Joorabchian’s AMO Racing, signed the ticket.
“We showed Kia the horse and he just loved him right from the get-go,” McElroy said. “Obviously, he’s by a sensational sire in Gun Runner. The full-brother is at stud. With what we paid today, we better hope for the same result.”
McDonald added, “He’s an absolute specimen of a horse. I haven’t seen a prettier Gun Runner ever. He showed 204 times and every time he moved, he had a fluid, strong, easy movement. He had a great mind, handled the sale really well. With that pedigree, I’m not surprised he brought that much, but you never go in thinking that much.”
Out of the Malibu Moon mare Luna Rosa, the chestnut colt is a full brother to multiple Grade 1 winner and young sire Locked, as McElroy alluded to. This is also the immediate family of two-time Grade 1 winner Gabby’s Golden Gal and multiple Grade 2 winner Always a Princess.
