Three Chimneys Farm’s brilliant 3-year-old filly Carina Mia added to her stellar resume with a 1 1/4-length score in the $700,000 Acorn S. (G1) at Belmont Park.
Much like she did in her six-length win in the Eight Belles S. (G2) on May 6, Carina Mia trailed the six-horse Acorn field for the first five furlongs while traveling along the inside. Julien Leparoux, whose has ridden her in all six starts, took the dark bay to the outside, going four wide coming into the stretch to assume command with about 3/16ths to run.
Cathryn Sophia gave chase, but could not match strides with the winner, who was a clear victress over a late-charging Off the Tracks. The final time for the mile on a fast track was 1:34.97.
“I thought I was going to be behind Cathryn Sophia and Go Maggie Go, but I saw them go away from there, so I decided to sit just off of them,” Leparoux said. “I felt confident at the top of the stretch. I came around everyone and she kicked on at the end.”
Carina Mia, who also won the Golden Rod S. (G2) at Churchill Downs at two, is now 4-1-0 in six starts and has earned $684,120 for her owner.
Bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm, Carina Mia is out of Miss Simpatica (ARG) and is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Miss Match.
