Kalithea battled to a head victory in the Gran Premio Polla de Portrancas (G1) Saturday afternoon at Palermo racetrack in Argentina. The 3-year-old filly is one of 10 stakes winners this year by her sire Exchange Rate, a group that includes recent Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante winner Sunset Glow.
In among horses for the first half-mile, Kalithea still had no running room with little more than a quarter mile to go. With a wall of five foes in front of her, she swung very wide to the middle of the track, and in a dramatic stretch run prevailed by a head. Kalithea covered the 1,600 meters (about 1 mile) in 1:35.35 over a muddy track (VIDEO).
The winner is the first foal out of the Southern Halo mare Katherine’s Halo, and was bred in Argentina by her owner Stud Haras Santa Ines. Kalithea has now won three of her four lifetime starts, including a win in the Grade 2 General Luis Maria Campos earlier this year.
