Grade 1 winner Brilliant Speed (Dynaformer – Speed Succeeds, by Gone West) was represented by his first foal on Tuesday, January 29 when Lacie Slew delivered a healthy colt at Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Stud in Ocala, Florida.
Best known for his come-from-behind win in the $750,000 Toyota Bluegrass Stakes-G1 at Keeneland in 2011, the Live Oak-bred and raced Brilliant Speed went on to win that year’s Saranac Stakes-G3 and place third in both the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes on dirt and the Breeders’ Cup Turf-G1 under the tutelage of trainer Tom Albertrani. He came back as a four-year-old to compete competitively at the Grade 1 level, running third in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic-G1, the Sword Dancer Invitational-G1 and the Bowling Green Stakes-G2, and retired sound with earnings of $1,203,531 at the conclusion of his four-year-old season.
Brilliant Speed’s first foal is out of the stakes-winning Mineshaft mare Lacie Slew. The colt is the first foal for the mare, who earned $259,642 on the track.
“We are very pleased with the quality of his first foal, especially considering it’s the first foal from the mare,” said Live Oak General Manager Bruce Hill. “From the looks of this foal, we don’t see any reason his offspring won’t develop into Grade 1 winners just as Brilliant Speed did.”
Brilliant Speed defeated an impressive 19 Grade 1 winners in his career, including Kentucky Derby-G1 winner Animal Kingdom and Breeders’ Cup Classic-G1 winner Mucho Macho Man.
“He is a big-barreled horse with a massive shoulder and hip,” said Three Chimneys president Case Clay. “He’s got all of the qualities people touted in Dynaformer, but he doesn’t have the coarseness that came along with it in his sire. People love how he looks, and we heard this time and time again at our open houses – good bone, big bodied without a lot of bulk, and athletic to the hilt.”
The combination of Roberto and Gone West in Brilliant Speed’s pedigree has afforded him breeder support both for his looks and because of his versatility over multiple surfaces. He is the only son of Dynaformer at stud in North America to break his maiden as a two-year-old and is from the family of Classic winner Touch Gold and Broodmare of the Year Passing Mood.
Brilliant Speed will be standing his second season at stud at Three Chimneys in 2014. His stud fee is $5,000.
