Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm’s Gun Runner, impressive winner of the $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2), put in his first work at Churchill Downs the morning of April 4 in preparation for the Kentucky Derby (G1).
The son of Candy Ride trained by Steve Asmussen breezed an easy half-mile under jockey Florent Geroux in :50 3/5, 16th fastest of 19 working the distance.
Gun Runner has experience at Churchill. He broke his maiden in his career debut last fall and finished fourth in the Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2), with an allowance win at Keeneland sandwiched in between.
The colt has won both of his starts this year. He swept the two Kentucky Derby preps at Fair Grounds Race Course—the Risen Star S. (G2) and Louisiana Derby.
