Gun Runner wrapped up his serious Kentucky Derby prep work on Monday at Churchill Downs, recording a half-mile in :50.40 while working on his own under exercise rider Carlos Rosas.
“Obviously, I’m very happy with the trajectory that he’s shown to this point,” Gun Runner’s Hall of Fam trainer Steve Asmussen said. “But we also know we need to be better. We’re in the process of it. The Louisiana Derby (G2) was a nice step in the right direction, and we’re expecting another step forward.”
Chris Baker, There Chimneys CEO, who was on hand as well, was pleased with what he saw from Gun Runner. “He’s really developing at the right time,” Baker said. “Look at his races, and see what he’s done. It’s almost like his physical developing has kind of mirrored that. So hopefully, he hasn’t peaked yet.”
The connections are now left to wait for the Derby post position draw on Wednesday afternoon.
Gun Runner, the points leader on the Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge with 151, has wins in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and Risen Star S. (G2) this year and has earned $906,920 for co-owners Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm.
