Leading sire Gun Runner once again made headlines Tuesday at Keeneland when Hip 146, a colt by the Three Chimneys stallion, sold for $2.2 million to Zedan Racing. The price marks the highest for a weanling sold in North America in more than a decade and the fourth-highest ever at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. Consigned by Denali Stud, agent, the colt was bred by Three Chimneys Farm, LLC and Brookdale Racing.
“Amr wants to win the (Kentucky) Derby,” said Donato Lanni, who signed the ticket on behalf of Zedan Racing. “This is that type of horse—by Gun Runner, he looks like he’ll go all day. It’s a lot of money, don’t get me wrong, but he’s a special-looking horse. You just don’t see these kinds of horses in November.”
Lanni added, “We’ll take him home, take good care of him, and raise him right. He’s by Gun Runner, one of the most prolific sires in the world today, and he certainly gets you a classic horse.”
The bay colt is out of Frizette S. (G1) winner Nickname, who is also the dam of Irish Group 3 winner Ides of March (IRE).
In 2025 alone Gun Runner is represented by four Grade 1 winners, including Brant, Sierra Leone, Locked, and Super Corredora.
Brant, owned by Zedan Racing, captured the Del Mar Futurity (G1) this season after being purchased for $3 million as a 2-year-old, while Super Corredora delivered a gate-to-wire victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).
