Dry Powder became Gun Runner’s 11th stakes winner of the year June 21 at Monmouth Park with her victory in the $100,000 Lady’s Secret S., likely earning her a start in the Molly Pitcher S. (G2) at Monmouth.
The Grade 1-placed 4-year-old filly took the lead from the outset and was able to post a half-mile of :48.48 while keeping her foes at bay. On the far turn, Dry Powder briefly lost the lead to a pair of closers, but quickly retook command and was clearly in front turning for home. She responded once again to the late challenge of Lika Rolling Stone, handily holding her off to win by three-quarters of a length.
“It’s not easy winning a stakes race,” said winning rider Paco Lopez. “This race showed that. She broke sharp and it didn’t look like anyone wanted the lead so I sent her. The important thing was to keep her outside and away from the rail, which she does not like. She was really game today. They all tried her and she was able to out-finish them.”
Winner of the Catherine Sophia S. and placing in both the Cotillion (G1) and Coaching Club Oaks (G1) last year, Dry Powder is 4-3-2 in 12 starts and has earned $603,400 for owner Gold Square LLC.
Dry Powder was bred in Kentucky by Corser Thoroughbreds LLC and sold for $525,000 at the 2023 Keeneland September sale.
Trainer Chad Summers said, “We kind of circled, early on in the season with [owner] Al Gold’s love for Monmouth Park, the GII Molly Pitcher [on the Haskell undercard July 18].
