I’mgonnabesomebody scored a hard fought victory in the Sam Spear Memorial S. on Labor Day at Golden Gate Fields, fighting off a stretch-long challenge to win the 1 1/16-mile turf race by three-quarters of a length (WATCH RACE).

It was the first stakes victory for the 4-year-old son of Will Take Charge, whose progeny are having another excellent year. Will Take Charge has been in the top five of his contemporaries every year at stud; this year he leads the Fifth-Crop list with seven stakes winners and 16 stakes horses, led by There Goes Harvard, winner of the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1).

I’mgonnabesomebody broke from the outside post in the field of nine and went to the lead right away, guiding the field through a half mile in :49.70. On the turn Jimmy Blue Jeans mounted a serious bid that would see the top two run side-by-side the rest of the way. I’mgonnabesomebody never surrendered the lead and edged clear in deep stretch to get the victory.

The winner is trained by Bill McLean, and owned by the trainer along with Nin Auyeung, Sharon Broetzman, Philip Crosby and Cheryl Hauck. The chestnut has won five of 11 starts and earned $109,780.

Bred in Kentucky by Elm Tree Farm, LLC, I’mgonnabesomebody is out of the stakes-placed Big Brown mare Brown Rice.
