A colt from the first crop of Palace Malice was secured for $550,000 by Eclipse Thoroughbreds’ Aron Wellman during Wednesday’s session of the OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training.
According to Wellman, the colt will go to Todd Pletcher, who trained Palace Malice to Grade 1 wins in the Belmont S. and Metropolitan H. among his six graded victories.
“Obviously Palace Malice is extremely special to us having been campaigned by Cot Campbell and Dogwood Stable,” Wellman said. “Some of the partners on Palace Malice have morphed into the Eclipse program, for which we are extremely grateful. In fact, we were pretty adamant that we were going to buy this colt here today and we picked out a name for him. He will be named after Mr. Campbell. He will be named Cothran.”
Consigned by Old South Farm LLC, agent, hip No. 368 is out of the Malibu Moon mare Moon Beamy and is a half-brother to the multiple stakes winner Daddy Justice.
Added Albert Davis of Old South Farm, “”He is the only Palace Malice I have had, but based on him, I would like to have another one.”
Palace Malice has an additional nine lots to sell during the remaining two sessions of the auction. On the racetrack, his first starter Letsstaypositive is in Keeneland’s 8th race on Thursday.
