Sharp Azteca now leads the 2022 First-Crop sire list after adding a pair of maiden special weight winners on Saturday, capping a terrific weekend for the Three Chimneys stallion who also got his first stakes winner with Tyler’s Tribe on Saturday. Sharp Azteca now has nine First-Crop winners, one more than Bolt d’Oro.

The maiden wins came from Honed at Ellis Park and Mister Sharpie at Louisiana Downs.

Honed, who was making his debut at one mile in an off-the-turf event. Cajun Blast was loose on the lead for the first six furlongs, but Honed reeled him in in the stretch to win by a head. The bay colt is owned by Three Chimneys and Magdalena Racing and was bred by Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Lloyd.

Mister Sharpie, who was also making his debut, had a much easier time in his five-furlong sprint. He got to the lead immediately and was never headed, drawing off in the lane to win by five lengths. Mister Sharpie is owned by Mike Powers and bred in Kentucky by Jay Goodwin and Cloyce C. Clark. The bay colt come from the family of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Stevie Wonderboy.
