Stowaway scored a front-running maiden special weight win Nov. 6 at Woodbine to give leading First-Crop sire Gun Runner his 20th winner.

Stowaway repelled several challenges to win the 1 1/16-mile contest by a half-length. The 2-year-old bay got early pressure from Queens Quay in the first half-mile, then from both Ralphie Boy and Spanish Prince in the stretch to win with great determination.

Stowaway was a $225,000 purchase by his owner D. J. Stables at the 2021 Fasig-Tiption Midlantic 2-year-old sale in May. Bred by Three Chimneys Farm, Stowaway is out of the Bernardini mare Secret Jewel and is a half-brother to Beaumont S. (G3) winner Twenty Carat. Secret Jewel is a half-sister to Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) winner Shared Account.

With more than $3.5 million in progeny earnings, buoyed by his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Echo Zulu, Gun Runner is almost certain to be the leading First-Crop sire of 2021. After breeding 168 mares this year, he’ll stand the 2022 season for $125,000 S&N.
