The under-tack preview of next week’s OBS April Sale of 2-Year-Olds kicked off Monday with a Strong Mandate colt working the co-fastest furlong time of :10 seconds flat.
Consigned by Randy Miles and cataloged as hip No. 144, the dark bay is out of Callous Effect, a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Miss Frost.
“We were expecting that kind of work because he has been the ultimate professional all year,” Miles said. “We were expecting it, but with the (cool and windy) weather conditions we were really concerned. So we were relieved when he did it. The wind was blowing like 20 mph in their faces today. It was really difficult conditions. The wind is very bothersome to these young horses, so to see him stand up and not let the wind bother him was very satisfying.”
Strong Mandate’s first crop are 2-year-olds of 2018. To date, they have an average sale price of $274,500, more than 27 times his stud fee. The Three Chimneys stallion has a total of 15 lots in the OBS sale, which runs April 24-27.
