Structor’s game tally in Saturday’s $200,000 Pilgrim S. (G3) made the 2-year-old colt the first graded stakes winner for Palace Malice. The Three Chimneys stallion also had two new winners this week and has risen into the top five on the First-Crop Sire list by winners, earnings and black type horses.
Structor, an $850,000 OBS March 2-year-old Sale buy, broke his maiden in his Aug. 31 debut on the Saratoga turf. Breaking from post 7 in the 1 1/16-mile Pilgrim. Stuck out three-wide the entire trip, Structor was third for the first six furlongs until he made a move for the lead just before entering the stretch. Despite pressure on both sides, he dug in to hold off Andesite by a head and get the distance in 1:41.46 on a firm turf.
“I was proud of this horse (knowing) how wide he had to travel the whole way,” winning trainer Chad Brown said. “No fault of the jockey, just his post and the way some horses wedged their way in there early. He gutted it out. This was a solid pace, :47 and change traveling three deep into the turn. To have enough to gut it out, I think he wouldn’t mind a cutback to a mile at all in the Breeders’ Cup (Juvenile Turf, Nov. 1 at Santa Anita Park). He’s an improving horse.”
Sturctor is owned by Jeff Drown and Don Rachel and has now earned $159,500 in his two starts. He is the first foal out of Miss Always Ready, who is a full sister to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G2) winner More Than Real. Structor was bred by Three Chimneys.
