Gun Runner was assigned post position 5 for Saturday’s $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1) when entries were drawn on Wednesday afternoon at Churchill Downs, an ideal spot for the 3-year-old colt owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm.
Gun Runner is the 10-1 co-third choice on the Derby morning line.
Gun Runner will have Florent Geroux in the irons on Saturday as he, trainer Steve Asmussen and his owners shoot for their first Derby victory.
“It’s looks like all the pace is to the outside,” said Asmussen after the draw. “Hopefully, pre-race, everything goes smoothly. Hopefully, he stands up in the gates. Hopefully, he’s away from there really good. But, we’re very anxious right now with a very good horse going into the Derby. He’s a tremendous horse. You want a good trip to show who he is.”
Gun Runner has stalked the pace in most of his races, including victories in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and Risen Star S. (G2) at Fair Grounds. Overall, the chestnut son of Candy Ride is 4-0-0 in five starts and has earned. $906,920.
The Kentucky Derby is race 12 on Saturday, with a scheduled post time of 6:34 p.m. ET. NBC television coverage runs from 4 – 7:30 p.m.
