Grade 1 winner Volatile was named a finalist for the 2020 Male Sprinter Eclipse Award when the year-end award nominees were announced Saturday on TVG.

Volatile, who raced for Three Chimneys Farm and Phoenix Thoroughbred III, made a huge impact on the sprint division as he rose rapidly through the ranks during the sprint and summer months. After a blowout allowance win at Oaklawn Park in late April, he took the Aristides S. in a record-setting performance, covering the six furlongs in 1:07.57 and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 112 – the highest number in 2020. He backed up that performance with another stellar outing, winning the Alfred G. Vanderbilt S. (G1) at Saratoga.

Though his career was cut short after that victory, Volatile’s future was secured when he took up residence at Three Chimneys, where he will begin his stud duties in 2021. Sold for $850,000 as a yearling, Volatile will stand this year for $17,500 S&N.

Eclipse Award winners will be announced on TVG, and other outlets, during a virtual ceremony of the 50th annual Eclipse Awards on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. ET.
