Fast Scene carried the Three Chimneys silks to victory in Sunday’s $100,000 Woodbine Cares S. in an extremely courageous effort, fighting back in the final strides to best Bayerly Seen by a head in the five furlong turf race for 2-year-old fillies.
The daughter of Fast Anna is now a two-time stakes winner, having previously won the My Dear S. over Woodbine’s main track on July 6. Her overall record now stands at 3-0-0 in four starts with earnings of $126,551 for Three Chimneys and co-owner Blazing Meadows Farm.
Fast Scene is one of Fast Anna’s three stakes winners from his first crop and is his leading earner to date.
The stage was set early for the late-race drama. Fast Scene and Bayerly Seen were 1-2 throughout the race, with Fast Scene leading the way through the first half-mile in :44.64, when Bayerly Seen came along side and briefly took the lead, but Fast Scene battled back to get the nod in :56.93 on the firm turf.
“She showed a lot of class today, she dug in, the horse came to her and (jockey Rafael Hernandez) just threw a cross on her and she came back,” said Scooter Davis, assistant to trainer Tim Hamm. “I was kind of worried a little bit, wondering if she would handle the turf, but she kind of redeemed herself (following her fourth-place finish on the grass in the Catch a Glimpse S. on Aug. 17) .”
Also bred by Three Chimneys, Fast Scene is out of the Empire Maker mare Scenic Drive, whose dam Mon Belle is a full sister to 2001 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Monarchos.
