Red Run became Gun Runner’s seventh black type winner in Sunday’s $200,000 Texas Turf Mile with a stirring come-from-behind victory over Bloodline.
Ridden by Joel Rosario, Red Run was near the back of the 10-horse field through the first half-mile of the race. Commencing his rally at that point, Rosario was well off the fence as he gained momentum on the turn. Third with a furlong to go, Red Run outran Bloodline late to win by a half-length in 1:37.75 on the firm turf.
“He is Gun Runner’s first winner, nice colt, beautiful action,” said trainer Steve Asmussen, referring to Red Run’s debut maiden win last May 9th at Churchill Downs. “Joel’s ridden him a few times; we feel he has a good future.”
Owned and bred by Winchell Thoroughbreds, Red Run is 2-1-0 in six starts and has earned $226,238. The chestnut colt is the first foal out of Red House, who is a full sister to champion Untapable and a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Paddy O’Prado.
After his record-setting year as champion Freshman Sire of 2021, Gun Runner has already accounted for four stakes horses in the first month of 2022, most recently this past Saturday when McLaren Vale placed in the San Vicente S. (G2) and Optionality ran second in the Martha Washington S.
