Costa Terra split horses at the top of the stretch and ran down Buckingham Prince in the final strides to break his maiden on July 1 at Ellis Park.

The chestnut colt is the sixth winner for Gun Runner, who leads the First-Crop sire list with $356,303 in progeny earnings to date.

Going five furlongs over a sloppy racetrack, Costa Terra was well off the pace around the turn, then hit his best stride in the stretch. He had three lengths to make up in the final furlong, and in a very well-timed ride, hit the wire a nose in front.

Costa Terra is a Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC homebred out of the stakes-placed mare Teardrop, whose first foal was Pegasus S. winner Pneumatic. Teardrop’s siblings include Forego S. (G1) winner and millionaire Pyro, Silverbulletday S. (G3) winner War Echo, and three-time stakes winner Longview Drive.
